Founded in 1989 by Mark Vasserman, what is known as About Space was then known as Design Station. In 2009, About Space opened its doors in Fitzroy for the first time as a decorative lighting company and has since transformed into one of Melbourne’s true luminaire destinations, offering decorative, architectural and commercial lighting solutions.
From humble beginnings, Mark utilised his eye for design and engineering skills to create specialised furniture pieces for his clients. His passion for design engineering and solution-providing has been the driving force behind the impressive growth of the About Space business.

Designed and made in Melbourne, our custom 2BY linear lighting range is a collection of original About Space products that make use of sharp angles and elongated shapes. They feature a linear piece of FSC certified Victorian Ash Timber with a recessed LED profile as well as pure brass and aluminum channels encasing Victorian Ash hardwood, finished in natural beeswax or stained black japan or walnut. The 2BY ceiling plate also comes in a variety of finishes, including a sophisticated brushed nickel and stylish and contemporary black.
In collaboration with local artist Brigit Heller, About Space has created a collection of show-stopping pendants - the Forma range. Made from mild steel wire, the art turned pendant light fittings have a natural rust black finish, which complements their organic shape.
A truly showstopping piece the Caterpillar Pendant is available in both Brass and Black. Flat Glass can be provided with an Opal finish while an Opal and Smoke finish are available in a Round shape. With custom drop lengths available upon request the Caterpillar Pendant is ideal for a commercial or residential space.
